DescriptionKenneth I. Pargament, professor of clinical psychology at Bowling Green State University, will define spirituality in terms of a basic human yearning for the sacred, a motivation that cannot be fully reduced to other psychological, social, and physical factors. I will examine empirical literature which suggests that: (l) people are motivated to preserve and protect what they hold sacred; (2) the sacred is a resource to people, particularly in stressful circumstances; (3) the sacred is linked with powerful spiritual emotions and psychosocial benefits; (4) the search for the sacred can take destructive paths. I will conclude by considering recent efforts to integrate spirituality more fully into our efforts to improve the human condition.
