Michael Brown, CPA, Senior Manager at Jaynes, Reitmeier, Boyd & Therrell, P.C. and Baylor graduate, has been recognized among the accounting profession's rising stars, selected as just one of 30 CPAs under age 36 for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' annual Leadership Academy in Durham, N.C.
Brown joined colleagues from across the country for three days in October 2010 to learn cutting edge leadership theory, develop tools for handling complex management challenges, network with other up-and-comers and discuss a host of strategic issues facing CPAs and the accounting industry. They were joined by some of the profession's most experienced leaders, including AICPA Chairman Bob Harris and Barry Melancon, the Institute's President and CEO.
"As the national voice of the profession, the AICPA believes it is vitally important to cultivate talented and committed young CPAs to lead the profession and help it meet its obligation to serve the public interest," said AICPA Chairman Robert Harris, CPA/CFF. "We are fortunate to help these ambitious, talented professionals develop the skills they'll need to guide the profession in the coming decades," said Harris.
The AICPA selected the 30 attendees of the Leadership Academy from more than 120 candidates recommended by their employers, state CPA societies or both. All candidates had to submit resumes that included work history, licensure information, professional volunteer activities, community service, and awards and honors. In addition, the candidates each had to supply a statement explaining why participating in the Leadership Academy would be important personally. The AICPA reviewed and evaluated each submission.
Brown, 30, joined Jaynes, Reitmeier, Boyd & Therrell, P.C. in 2001. He graduated cum laude with a bachelors in accounting and masters of taxation degrees from Baylor University in 2001. Brown became licensed as a CPA in 2002 and is also Accredited in Business Valuation and Certified in Financial Forensics by the AICPA. Brown serves on the Board of Directors of the Texas Society of CPAs. He is Chairman of the Young CPAs and Emerging Professionals Committee and also serves on the Business Valuation, Forensic and Litigation Services Committee of the TSCPA. Brown received the 2009 Chairman's Citation for Service from the TSCPA for his volunteer service to the Society. Brown is Vice President of the Central Texas Chapter of the TSCPA and also serves on the Board of Directors of the Dr. Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute.
