Twelve Teams Are Selected to Compete in National Case Study Competition
Twelve student teams were chosen recently to advance to the first annual Deloitte & Touche Tax Challenge national case study competition, sponsored by the Deloitte Foundation. The six graduate and six undergraduate teams that advance from the regional competitions will compete in the national finals November 22-24 in Orlando, Florida. The sponsor of the event, the Deloitte Foundation, is the non-profit arm of professional services firm Deloitte & Touche LLP.
Approximately 60 teams from 40 colleges and universities participated in the Deloitte & Touche Tax Challenge regional competitions. The 2002 graduate school finalists are: Baylor University, Brigham Young University, University of Denver, University of Kansas, University of Southern California, and Utah State University. The undergraduate finalists are: Brigham Young University, University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana, University of Iowa, University of North Carolina - Charlotte, College of William & Mary, and University of Wisconsin - Madison.
"We are proud to expose today's accounting students to real-life tax issues through this interactive, team-oriented exercise," said Mark M. Chain, president of the Deloitte Foundation and national director of recruiting and human resources management for Deloitte & Touche. "The program provides students with an exceptional educational experience while permitting them to gain a sense of a professional work environment."
Teams of up to four students were given five hours to complete a complex, hypothetical case study that required them to identify issues, and consider alternative tax treatments for a fictitious client situation. The scope of topics covered in the cases and the level of technical complexity was consistent with a typical first course in taxation.
The upcoming national competition will award members of the top team a $1,000 scholarship each as well as $10,000 for their school. The national second place team will be awarded $500 per student and $5,000 for their school, and all other participating team members will receive $250 each and $2,500 for their school.
