Four Baylor students won first place at The Texas Investment Portfolio Symposium (TIPS) at Rice University's Jones Graduate School of Business on Saturday, Feb. 21. The team consisted of Erica Jiang, Minh Le, Temmy Ode, and Rachel Rohweder.
The TIPS conference provides more than 200 college students and faculty throughout Texas and Southwest universities the opportunity to interact with senior investment industry professionals through presentations, panel discussions, and networking opportunities.
“My experience at the TIPS conference has helped give me experience in my career field because it allowed me the opportunity to listen to experts in the field, but it also tested my own knowledge,” said junior, Rachel Rohweder.
One of the competitions Baylor competed in was the Portfolio Managers Finalist Competition. The teams pitched their investment process to a panel of investment professionals, in a manner similar to the finals presentations that investment firms make to win institutional business. Each team had 10 minutes to convince the judges that they should be hired to manage the hypothetical account. The other finalists’ Baylor competed against included: Rice University, Tulane, Texas Lutheran University, and the University of Dallas.
Minh Le, a first-year MBA student, found the conference helpful. “TIPS provides me [the] opportunity to sharpen my communication skills and expand networking activities,” said Le.
Winning showed that the judge’s believed that Baylor’s investment process would likely produce the best results over time. The team credited Baylor’s curriculum and Professor Brandon Troegle for the preparation needed to secure the win.
“Professor Troegle…was very supportive and encouraging,” said senior, Temmy Ode. “He made sure we were prepared to answer almost every question that could have come up and went over our presentation with us.”
