Management Information Systems (MIS) Track

Overview

The MIS  track builds technical skills with a theoretical, hands-on, and project-based curriculum.   Students pursuing the MIS track master the latest technologies and understand system development basics.  Students will be assets in the current business environment and will have skills that will enable them to master the latest technical trends.  MIS graduates develop the following technical and business skills.

Technical Skill Development

  • How to program systems using Visual Basic.NET, C++, and Java.
  • How to analyze a business, design a system to improve the business, and  implement the system
  • How to manage an organization’s data.  Including linking an organization’s database to the web and vice versa.  Students use Oracle. 
  • How to set-up and maintain networks.
  • How to protect systems from hackers, viruses, and unauthorized users.
  • How to develop web pages and electronic commerce applications that interface with client server and mainframe systems. 

Business Skill Development

  • Critical thinking
  • Problem solving
  • Written and oral communication
  • Project management including teamwork and conflict management

Careers

Students with an MIS degree have many career options including:

  • systems analyst
  • web designer
  • consultant
  • programmer
  • telecommunications specialist
  • security specialist
  • database coordinator
  • software engineer
  • project manager
  • technology coordinator
  • several MIS track graduates are now senior managers and chief executive officers. 

Most graduates begin their careers as analysts.  An analyst works with business users to understand their information technology needs.  They then work with information technology programmers and vendors to design systems that meet the end users’ needs. 

MIS Required Courses (18 hours)

All MIS track students take the following four courses (12 hours):

  • MIS 3301 - Introduction to Business Programming Logic
  • MIS 3320 - Systems Analysis and Design
  • MIS 4342 - Advanced Business Networking
  • MIS 4340 - Foundations of Database Management Systems Management

Select one (1) of the following (3 hours):

  • MIS 3341 - Developing Client-Server Applications
  • MIS 4320 - E-Commerce Systems Development
  • MIS 4321 - Business Systems Development

Select one (1) of the following (3 hours):

  • MIS 4330 - Project Management
  • MIS 4350 - Cyber Security Technology Factors

Business Electives

MIS majors have fifteen credit hours of electives and have the option of applying all these elective credit hours towards upper level business courses. Students may therefore enroll in additional MIS courses as electives or they may take courses from other departments within the Hankamer School of Business. Some possible MIS elective courses include:

  • MIS 4343 - Advanced Database
  • MIS 4344 - Data Mining
  • MIS 3332 - Control and Audit of Information Systems
  • Other MIS courses not taken as part of 18 hour requirement

Some very useful non-MIS electives include:

  • MGT 4320- Negotiating and Conflict Resolution
  • MGT 4335- Management Consulting
  • MGT 4310- Team Development and Management
  • ENT 4330- Initiating and Sustaining Innovation
  • MKT 3310- Professional Selling and Communication

Note: when planning their schedules, students should consult with the Information Systems Department to determine the availability of certain MIS elective course offerings.
