Earning an MBA presents many challenges, from learning new business concepts and how to apply them on the job to taking time off from work to study full time. But one of the biggest challenges MBA students face is landing a dream job after graduation.

To make that goal a reality for Baylor’s Full-Time MBA students, Baylor has a powerful student support system that includes MBA-specific career resources and a vibrant alumni network ready to help.

Career Support Tailored to MBA Graduates

Baylor’s Career Center offers a robust suite of services that support career readiness for MBA students. Whether you know exactly what company, industry, or job function you are targeting or need help assessing your interests and skills for the right fit, the center offers one-on-one coaching as well as career management classes that guide Baylor's Full-Time MBA students through all stages of the job search.

The center has a team of three career professionals, each with over a decade of higher education and corporate experience, who focus solely on the needs of MBA students. They are Career Professionals Christie Walker, Assistant Director Amine Qourzal, and Director Mike Estepp.

“In addition to providing a host of tailored career services, our relationship-based coaching allows us to know our students’ career aspirations very well and, as a result, become better partners,” Qourzal said.

“While we are not a placement office, we thrive on the ability to coach our students on the tools they need for career success,” Amine Qourzal said. “It is one thing to be handed a job, and another thing to be taught how to get a job. The skills we impart are those that can be used for the career journey long after earning their MBA.”

The center works with students to create resumes focused on the unique objectives and talents of each candidate. Social media profiles, particularly LinkedIn, are tailored to tell the student’s professional story in a compelling way. In the end, the goal is a solid personal brand.

That process often involves a skills gap analysis that pinpoints areas where more experience or practice is needed. Coaches also review trends in industries of interest and encourage students to consider a wider job market if it fits their goals and individual skillset to help students plot the right course.

Many of the services focus on building communication skills and getting crystal clear on goals—areas like preparing for interviews, networking effectively, developing emotional intelligence, and negotiating job offers, salaries and benefits.

“We do this mainly through one-on-one coaching, but also we walk them through these items in our core career management classes,” Qourzal said. “Students also get a chance to practice mock interviewing with their career coaches. In the courses, they give presentations on numerous career-related topics, such as work-life balance, and get feedback on their performance.”

Direct Conversations With Companies Looking to Hire

Baylor’s MBA recruiting efforts attract hiring companies in finance, consulting, health care, information technology, retail, consumer packaged goods as well as many other industries and business sectors. Two career fairs each year and dozens of employer interviews—both on-campus and over Zoom—give students direct access to companies that are hiring and a chance to hone the skills they’ve learned in networking and personal branding.

“Our career fairs average over 100 employers in attendance,” Qourzal said. “We also partner with the National Black MBA Association and Prospanica for recruiting our MBAs on a national level.”

While attending networking events with Baylor’s Dallas alumni base and a customized annual leadership summit in New York City, students get the chance to talk with industry professionals from a wide variety of organizations.

Alumni Who Make Connections

The center reaches out to Baylor alumni to connect students with professional opportunities and these professionals consistently step up to help out. Additionally, alumni will often contact the center first when they hear of an opening.

“The alumni are very supportive,” Qourzal said. “They frequently send us job openings at their organizations and are always happy to help with the application process. We are constantly staying in touch.”

One alumnus recently hired an intern from the first-year cohort to work on projects at his company. The internship turned out to be a valuable experience for both the student and the company. So much so that it continued as a part-time job and shown the possibility of developing into a full-time position.

Another alum recently referred a student to their hiring manager to join their team. “What made this hire so great was that the student was requiring international sponsorship—which can be very difficult to obtain—and the alum’s recommendation led to that individual being hired and sponsored,” Qourzal said.

Baylor connects students and alumni in more structured ways, too. It hosts a closed LinkedIn group where nearly 1,000 MBA alumni and students can network, as well as career panels with alumni industry experts and career treks to regional offices. The center also helps students meet Baylor alumni in companies of interest through virtual introductions.

Qourzal went on to say that Career Center support does not end with graduation, “We are happy to provide career support, even after our students graduate, for as long as they need us.”

Qourzal added, “Once a Bear, always a Bear!”
