Baylor University MBA and Executive MBA Students Continue to Win Big
A team of four Baylor EMBA and MBA students competed at the Fourth Annual Texas Shoot-Out Real Estate Challenge hosted by the North Texas chapter of NAIOP, at The Dallas Country Club Thursday, April 2nd and walked away with a second place finish. Team members were Dewayne Bailey (Dallas EMBA), Peter Flynn (Austin EMBA), Ian Gibson, and Lou Miller (full-time MBA students in Waco). Despite being spread across Central Texas, and not even meeting each other until the night before the competition, this "virtual team," was able to achieve great success.
The Baylor team competed against six other teams from across the state including: University of Texas, Southern Methodist University, Texas A&M, Texas Tech University, Rice University and Texas Christian University. Teams were each given cases based on a real property on Thursday March 26th, and were asked to create a proposal (based on investment criteria) to either sell the property as is, develop the land, or a joint venture with another developer.
The Baylor team's plan included developing the land as a six level office and retail property, with a two level restaurant. After making their presentation to a panel of three judges, the team advanced to the final round and presented their plan to a much larger panel consisting of more than 200 developers, bankers and realtors at a reception hosted by NAIOP.
"Our team was successful because the skills and strengths of each member complemented the others. We credit the Baylor MBA professors and programs for sharpening our analytical and presentation skills while preparing us to be informed and innovative business leaders," Miller said.
The team was awarded $7,500 from NAIOP for their second place finish. Thirty percent of the prize money is given to Baylor, while the remaining 70 percent was divided equally among the team members.
