Baylor MBA Students Take 3rd Place at Purdue's B2B Marketing Case Competition
Oct. 28, 2008
The Baylor MBA case competition team continued its success by taking third place at the Krannert Business to Business Marketing & Strategy Case Competition held October 18 on the Purdue University campus.
Competing against top ranked MBA programs, including Purdue, Carnegie-Mellon, Indiana, and Vanderbilt, the Baylor MBA students were recognized for developing innovative ideas and metrics used to measure the success of their recommendations. The MBA team from Notre Dame took first place while MBA students from Penn State earned second place in the competition.
The MBA teams received the case upon arrival and worked five hours to prepare recommendations on how Scriptlogic could take advantage of new opportunities. Since its inception, Scriptlogic sold software to small and medium sized businesses through an 'inside rep to Systems Administrator' channel. Scriptlogic focused on the system administrators, who carry out most of the IT activities. While the company was growing so quickly, Value-Added Resellers emerged as another opportunity. The students developed suggestions on how Scriptlogic could work with existing customers to keep from missing out on a large revenue base and how Scriptlogic could work with its sales force in order to keep pace with the continuing addition of new customers.
"We needed to identify whether the long existing strategy of Scriptlogic, which produces desktop and server management software, was sustainable for the kind of growth it was having," explained Riley Ross, MBA '08 from Oklahoma.
"Baylor's MBA program has shown us how to deliver solid results and durable recommendations, which are backed with substance," Tommy Gordon, MBA '08 from Kentucky, said. "The metrics we developed to measure our recommendations for Scriptlogic set us apart from the other teams."
The Baylor MBA team also included Tim Hutchinson, MBA '08 from Canada, and Raj Suvarna, MBA '08 from India. Dr. Charles Stanley, professor of accounting, served as the faculty sponsor for the team.
Next up for the Baylor MBA team is Howard University's Supply Chain Case Competition scheduled for Nov. 1. Then the team will compete in Baylor's National Ethics Case Competition on Nov. 5-8.
