Former employees of the General Tire and Rubber Company and their families are invited to visit the Baylor Research & Innovation Collaborative (BRIC) discovery park as part of a special homecoming event this fall. On the first four Fridays in November (Nov. 1, 8, 15, and 22) Baylor welcomes former General Tire employees and members of their families to share stories and memories while they tour the new BRIC building and see the General Tire plant transformation first-hand.
On each of the four dates, two tours will be offered, first at 3:00 p.m. and again at 4:00 p.m. Group size for each Friday in November is limited, so early registration is recommended. Coffee, soft drinks, and sweet treats will be available.
The General Tire and Rubber Company opened its doors in 1944 to produce much-needed tires to support the combat efforts of World War II. The plant remained an economic driver for the Waco community until 1986 when the plant was closed during the tire industry transition to the production of radial-ply tires at other locations. In 2009 the building and surrounding acreage was donated to Baylor University to become the home of the BRIC, the centerpiece and first facility of the Central Texas Technology and Research Park.
The BRIC, when fully operational in 2016, will contain within its walls a distinctive mix of community partners which include academic research, industry collaboration, workforce development and training, and community outreach. At the BRIC, area students will have access to learning opportunities and research experiences in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines beginning in kindergarten and progressing through graduate school.
Founding partners located in the BRIC independently accomplish great things for the region. Being located in close proximity to one another within the BRIC sparks the sharing of great ideas and increases the potential for the historic building to once again become an economic driver for the region.
Registration for General Tire Fridays at the BRIC is now closed.
