by Dorynda Brock, Baylor Staff Council
Join our Baylor team as we "Race for the Cure" at the fourth annual Komen Central Texas Race for the Cure. Race for the Cure is the largest race event held in the Temple/ Waco / Killeen area. A 5K (3.1 Mile) walk/run as well as a 1-mile walk/run will take place this year on Saturday, April 3, in downtown Waco. The race will attract more than 5,000 people in the continuing effort to fund breast cancer screening, research, education and treatment.
Baylor's Staff Council recently selected Race for the Cure as our 2004 spring project. We want to encourage all Baylor faculty, staff and students to participate. Overall, there were 6,298 participants in the 2003 race. 1,245 participants were from Baylor (including 994 students and 251 faculty/staff).
We are organizing a team of runners and walkers who wish to participate in the race. The one-mile and 5K races are open to both runners and walkers alike. Awards will be given in various age categories, as well as to the top three survivors. Teams are also eligible to receive special recognition awards!
The Komen Central Texas Race for the Cure attracted more than 6,000 participants last year, and we want our teams to make that number even bigger this year. More than $200,000 was raised in 2003 to fight breast cancer. Seventy-five percent of those funds stayed right here in our six county area to fund local grant programs specific to breast cancer education, outreach, screening and treatment. The remaining 25 percent benefits the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Award and Research Grant Program.
