Chris is interested in how unique and inexpensive plant-based technologies can be used for medical applications, such as the production of viral nanoparticle vaccines or the control of mosquito vectors of human disease.
Our research is on regulation of gene expression, specifically RNA degradation. We study the evolutionarily conserved Nonsense-Mediated mRNA Decay pathway (NMD), in oreder to understand the degradation of natural, non-nonsense containing mRNA in yeast.
Our current work is focused on uncovering the regulatory mechanisms which facilitate EMT in both normal and cancerous settings, describing the specific targets and roles of these regulatory mechanisms and testing small molecule inhibitors of these proteins to ultimately lead to novel therapeutic strategies.
