Declaring as a Biology Major

To declare Biology as a major you must meet the following requirements:

• You must have completed the introductory biology course sequence: BIO 1305 and 1105 or BIO 1405
AND BIO 1306 and 1106 or BIO 1406; all with grades of "C" or better.*

*This may be accomplished by taking the courses at Baylor OR earning a 5 on the AP Biology exam.
Transfer credit for these courses will only be accepted if the work was completed PRIOR TO matriculating
   to Baylor.

**If a student fails to earn a grade of "C" or better in one or more of the introductory sequence courses
after the second attempt, he/she will be permanently ineligible to declare Biology as a major.

• You must have accrued fewer than 90 overall credit hours.

The process of converting from pre-Biology to Biology major:

Approximately one month after grades are posted each semester, pre-Biology majors who have satisfactorily completed ALL prerequisites for declaring he Biology will be notified of their eligibility to become majors. Subsequently, the pre-Biology designation on the student's record will be changed to Biology major, automatically. No application is required. Additionally, the student will automatically be assigned to an academic advisor within the College of Arts and Sciences Advisement (CASA, students who have accrued fewer than 60 credit hours) or within the Department of Biology (students who have accrued 60-89 credit hours). At the next advising appointment, the student will discuss with his/her advisor which Biology track is desired: PreHealth, Ecology, Science Education, General, etc.

The process of transitioning to Biology from another major:

If a student is currently a major in another department AND meets all the requirements for declaring Biology as a major, he/she should follow the instructions listed below to transition to Biology.

1. Fill out the Application to Declare a Biology Major.

2. Attach a copy of your unofficial transcript (this can be found on BearWeb) for verification that you
have passed all introductory courses with a grade of "C" or better.

3. Turn in the completed application and unofficial transcript to the Department of Biology in the Baylor
    Sciences Building (BSB) room B.207.

Once your application has been verified, the Department of Biology will inform the Degree Plan Office of your eligibility to declare Biology as a major. An email will be sent to your Baylor email address linking you to a data form that must be completed before the change can be made in the system. At this time you will indicate which Biology degree track you desire (pre-health, ecology, science education, general).

Please keep in mind that if you do not fill out the Data Form from the Degree Plan Office, your major will not be changed.

After your major has been changed, you will automatically be assigned to an academic advisor within the College of Arts and Sciences either within College of Arts and Sciences Advisements (CASA, students who have accrued fewer than 60 credit hours) or within the Department of Biology (students who have accrued 60-89 credit hours).
