Colby's research interests include diving mammal anatomy and physiology and potential links to human medicine, specifically focusing on decompression sickness and ischemia reperfusion injury.

Colby is from Boston, Massachusetts. She completed her undergraduate degree at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY, and received a masters degree at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine.
