Baylor Jazz

The Baylor Jazz Program is a program dedicated to the study and performance of the uniquely American art form of Jazz. The ensembles are made up of students from many different disciplines from around the campus, who have a passion and love of performing, writing, and learning about this great music.

The large jazz ensembles, the Baylor Jazz Ensemble and the Concert Jazz Ensemble, provide students with the opportunity to play the music of the swing era to the music of the cutting edge big bands of today. The Baylor Jazz Ensemble is our premiere jazz ensemble that performs many concerts both on and off campus throughout the school year.

Jazz small groups meet weekly throughout the school year. These groups of between 4-9 students provide our students with the opportunity to perform in the improvisationally based small group setting. It also provides the students the opportunity to put into practical use the information discussed in their improvisation classes, the arranging classes and the jazz history class.

World renowned jazz musicians, writers and artisits visit the Baylor campus annually. These musicians give clinics and masterclasses in a variety of jazz diciplines, and they perform with our students and our ensembles.

The Baylor Jazz Program Goals

To provide the teachers of tomorrow with the knowledge and skills to start, run and teach a successful jazz program.

To provide playing and performing opportunities in both large and small jazz ensembles.

To encourage and guide students to find their own voice in performing, writing and arranging music.

To provide students with a good understanding of this improvisational music so that they can be the successful and inspirational musicians, writers and performers of tomorrow.

To describe the importance, complexity and beauty of Jazz so that our students will become the listeners, consumers and fans of the next generation of jazz musicians.
