Technology Overview

We are one of few universities in the country to have a Dynavision D2 Board, DXA and Omegawave within their facility. Combined, these capabilities give us direct access to assessment measures and the related data that is unlike any other collegiate facility in the country.

Dynavision D2 Board

Dynavision

The Dynavision™ is essentially a large reaction device containing 64 lights configured in 5 nested rings. The user positions in front of the height adjusted lights and reacts as quickly as possible by striking them as they turn on in random succession. Additionally it can flash numbers/letters and/or shapes at various speeds to train the user in multi-tasking exercises. With all of the options available it can be used in literally hundreds of different ways. Data can be saved, printed or eventually down-loaded for tracking progress and keeping records. The Dynavision™ is employed to aid in any or all of; scanning, selection, evaluation, recovery and/or on-going training/improvement, through forced cognitive training, honing visual reaction and sensory-motor integration. It serves, Traumatic Brain-injury (TBI), Visual Field Deficit, Driver Training, Stroke Recovery, and numerous other therapeutic, neuroscientific and physiological needs. The Dynavision™ is used in over 600 hospitals and rehabilitation centers, athletic high performance training centers, professional sports teams, and police and military forces in the USA, Canada and around the world.

DXA

Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry or DXA is a means of measuring bone mineral density, total body composition, in addition to body fat content. The process begins with the athlete lying down on the examination table, and the scanner rapidly directs x-ray energy from two different sources towards the body. The absorption rate of the x-ray is used to calculate the concentration of minerals in the bone along with the percentage of body fat, as well as soft tissue mass. Total duration of the scan is around 8-10 minutes to do a body scan. Upon completion, we will have a number with a high degree of precision within 2-3 percent of error. The DXA is considered a gold standard for measuring bone density, body composition and body fat content. This makes old technology such as skin calipers, hydrostatic weighing and air displacement obsolete. This gives us an extremely accurate way to evaluate the effectiveness of our training programs.

Omegawave

Omegawave helps coaches and other sports professionals optimize the outcome of every individual workout, which leads to optimal functional preparedness and readiness. Consequently, athletes can take full advantage of their skills, leading to unprecedented improvements in performance.

Omegawave systems monitor the function of multiple biological systems and provide a comprehensive picture of changes in athletes, as they respond to training, life choices, and emotional stress. The assessments are noninvasive, mostly done at rest, and can be performed anywhere in as little as two minutes. As a result, the athlete can be tested as often as desired.

Unlike traditional testing methods, Omegawave produces immediate, relevant results that aren't taxing on the athlete. Designed for daily use, Omegawave reveals trends, not just the snap shot provided by traditional tests. Click here for more information from Omegawave's website

Tendo

tendo1

Up until recently there was no way to easily determine power output and bar speed in training and testing. The Tendo does just that. Power is the most important ingredient in many sports and can be simply defined as force x velocity. It is a product of strength and velocity of muscular contraction.

If athletes are training for force production, we look at both mass and acceleration. The Tendo unit easily hooks to the barbell, plate stack or athlete and measures velocity in meters per second up to a 3 meter range of motion. When the mass of barbell or athlete has been entered into the microcomputer, the unit gives velocity as well as power output measurements. When the information collected is used properly, it can increase the efficiency of resistance training.

Dartfish

Dartfish is one of the most exciting creations in the field of sports science. Dartfish is motion analysis software that literally makes the invisible, visible. You've seen Dartfish software in use on NBC Sports' coverage of the Olympic Games.

Dartfish allows for repeated instant feedback, along with great coaching tools for drawing or measuring data. Dartfish allows for much more complex analysis of complicated human motion, such as execution of the Snatch, or Clean. A coach can easily and quickly measure a video clip, create key point instruction pictures, and show the athlete exactly where the movement is going wrong. Dartfish is a very beneficial tool for strength & conditioning coaches.

Suunto

The Suunto system measures an individual's heart rate in real time. This data yields near-laboratory-accurate information on the true training effect of the athletes training session, guiding the athletes toward optimal fitness without over or under-training.
