Waco Area High School Students on Campus Saturday to Learn About AddictionApril 29, 2010
High school students from the Waco area will be on the Baylor University campus on Saturday, May 1, to learn about the science behind drug and alcohol addiction as part of the inaugural Baylor Addiction Research Consortium's (BARC) Scholars Day. The event, which is free for the students, is sponsored by BARC and the Baylor/Waco Foundation.
"We intend for this to be a springboard to start training students to be peer educators that can learn about alcohol and drugs and bring that knowledge back to their schools and communities," said Dr. Sara Dolan, assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience at Baylor. "We hope this will become a program where we bring high schoolers to campus for this type of an event each year."
The students will tour addiction research labs and will learn about the science of addiction and the neurological aspects associated with it. They also will hear a presentation about preventing addiction from the Heart of Texas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse. The event will end with a roundtable for the students to talk about the drug and alcohol problems in their own communities.
