Appalachia Field School (2004)

Professor: Dr. Sara E. Alexander

The field school in Appalachia provides students the opportunity to learn about culture ecology and environmental anthropology in the Red River Gorge region of eastern Kentucky. The course is structured in a way that students are introduced to a range of field methods while using them to collect primary data for their own research projects.

Topical areas of recent student research include: options for managing public lands; alternative strategies for reconciling wilderness preservation and recreation demands; effective mitigation of conflicts over resource use; comparative studies of rural Appalachian lifeways; and feasibility studies addressing ecotourism as a viable development strategy for Appalachia.
