Gettin' it Dunn

dunn_recordFourteen-year NBA veteran David Wesley couldn't do it. Brian Skinner, one of four NBA first-round picks in Baylor history, didn't accomplish the feat, either. Nor could all-Americans Micheal Williams, Darryl Middleton and Curtis Jerrells.

But finally, after almost 30 years, former Baylor star Terry Teagle saw his career scoring mark broken. Senior LaceDarius Dunn set a new BU record Feb. 15, surpassing the 2,189 points Teagle scored for the Bears between 1979 and 1982.

"It was just an awesome accomplishment for me, for my family, for the Baylor tradition, for everybody," said Dunn after the game. "And I'm just proud to get it."

To give you some sense of how long Teagle held the Baylor record: When Teagle took over the record from Vinnie Johnson in 1982, it would be another five years before LaceDarius Dunn was even born.

Dunn now holds the title, along with another. In his final home regular season game -- a nationally televised match against Texas -- Dunn set the Big 12 Conference's career scoring mark.

Dunn's name is all over the Baylor, Big 12 and NCAA recordbooks and leader boards. You want scoring? In addition to the records above, as this issue went to press, Dunn led the Big 12 and was among the top 30 in the nation at 19.8 points per game.

You want 3-pointers? He's second among all active players in career 3-pointers and No. 14 all-time; on the season, he ranks No. 6 in the nation. Dunn long ago set the Baylor career record, needed just three more 3-pointers to become the Big 12′s career leader, and had made at least one 3 in a school-record 44 straight games.

Head coach Scott Drew's Bears haven't been just a one-man show, however. At press time, the Bears looked to be headed to the postseason for the fourth straight season -- tops in school history. It's no coincidence that the most successful four-year period in Baylor men's basketball history matches up with the four seasons in which Dunn wore a Baylor uniform.
