Baylor > AirBear

Welcome to the Airbear Website

Here you will find information about Baylor University's wireless network. AirBear is free to anyone with a valid Bear ID and password. With AirBear you can connect to the Internet from your computer without being tied to a desk.

AirBear not for Office Use

AirBear was originally deployed to cover classrooms and common areas were students may gather. It is not intended to be a substitute for the wired network connection available in all faculty and staff offices, and therefore, is not guaranteed in those areas. Wireless, as currently deployed, is less secure and connectivity is less reliable, much like a cell phone, which could also have an adverse affect on the backup process. Although faculty and staff may experience some wireless signal in their office, this is based on their proximity to a classroom or common area. ITS requests that all employees use the wired connections while in their offices to ensure better reliability, security and backups.

Leopard/AIRBEAR Update!

Explanation of problem:

Mac OSX 10.5 (Leopard) moved the 802.1x application from Internet Connect.app to System Preferences.app. In doing so, something was altered within the code that reads and writes to your Keychain. As a result, Leopard is having difficulty with security certificates. This appears to be a bug in OS X, as it fails with an "Incompatible Security error," and it doesn't appear in the AIRBEAR logs. The Mac appears to be "deciding" that it will not work before the computer communicates with the wireless access point.

Other universities using 802.1x are experiencing the same issue, and it has been verified by an Apple Systems Engineer, who has been on campus and replicated these issues.

iPhone Email Instructions

We now have instructions for setting up your Baylor email on your iPhone. NOTE: iPhones/iTouch still do not support 802.1x encryption, so Airbear will not work on them.

IMPORTANT!!! Airbear Certificate Update

When installing Airbear on your laptop, you will now need to also download and install the Airbear Certificate Update in order to remain secure. Just download, open the .zip file, and double-click the certificate. Then click the "Install Certificate" button and follow the prompts. You should only have to do this once. Call x6536 if you have problems.

Password Reset Tool

We now have a tool that will reset your Airbear logon information for Windows XP. Download and extract the Password Reset Utility v.1, double click the icon, and enter "Y" when prompted. Your logon credentials will be erased, and you should then be prompted to enter new credentials.

Windows Vista Information

Vista is fully compatible with Airbear. All you need to do is to right-click on your wireless icon, and select "Connect to a netowrk." Then follow the on-screen instructions and put in your Bear_ID, password, and BAYLOR as the domain. You can also bring your laptop by the Baylor Computer Repair Shop behind the Baylor Bookstore from 8am-12pm and 1pm-5pm, M-F to get help with configuring Airbear under Vista.

We now have a fix for the third-party wireless client issue.

If you can't configure Airbear or the setup utility does not work, download and run this batch file wifiFix. After that, setup Airbear and it should work just fine.

You can bring your laptop to the Baylor Computer Repair Shop behind the Baylor Bookstore from 8am-12pm and 1pm-5pm, M-F to get it set up for Airbear.

What is Airbear?

Airbear is Baylor University's on-campus wireless network. It is an 802.11b/g (with some 802.11a areas available) type network that covers the vast majority of campus buildings and several outdoor areas of campus. Click here to see where Airbear is available. Airbear uses 802.1x authentication for security, making it one of the most secure wireless networks in the country.
