Academics

In 1976, Baylor University founded the Institute of Archaeology. Its emphasis is to maintain the highest academic quality and provide the student interested in archaeology with a broad and thorough grounding in the field. This is accomplished by offering courses in Old World and New World archaeology as well as field archaeology. Since the 1970s, Baylor has sponsored field school experience in such locations as:

  • Israel,
  • Eastern Mediterranean, especially Crete,
  • Central America,
  • Northern Europe, especially Denmark and Sweden, and
  • Central Texas.

In addition to these locations, students earning their B.A. degree through the Institute of Archaeology have participated in field schools associated with other universities in Africa, central Europe (Rome), and Asia.

The Institute of Archaeology is one of the few American universities to offer an undergraduate major in Archaeology. It is an interdisciplinary major that draws from the expertise and interest of faculty in departments across Baylor University. Students have the opportunity to participate in projects that involve Geology, Geography, Chemistry, Religion, and Anthropology. The faculty currently teaching within the Institute of Archaeology include:

Leslie G. Cecil (ANT) Ph.D. (SIUC) Mesoamerica, Archaeological Science
Garrett Cook (ANT) Ph.D. (SUNY) Texas, Eastern North America, Mesoamerica
C. Alton Hassell (CHE) Ph.D. (TAMU) Chemistry, Analytical Methods
Lee Nordt (GEO) Ph.D. (TAMU) Geoarchaeology
Lynn W. Tatum (REL) Ph.D. (Duke) Biblical Archaeology.
