AFROTC Starts New Year

Sept. 28, 2009

By Kelsi Sapp, 810th AFROTC Cadet Wing/PA

Waco, TX -- We have started off this semester of Baylor AFROTC with an exciting bang! 97 new cadets have come to join or program, with most attending the semester's kick-off event know as "Pre-Flight." Pre-Flight is designed to give incoming cadets a chance to acclimate to Baylor's campus and Air Force ROTC while having fun bonding time with their fellow cadets. This 3-day event is entirely cadet planned and led and includes older cadets helping you move into your dorm, a campus tour, mentoring sessions, problem solving games, ultimate frisbee, a Cameron Park cookout, dinner with cadre members, info/Q&A sessions for both new cadets and parents regarding the program and campus life, movie/game nights and so much more! This year Pre-Flight was under the direction of 5th year senior Bradley Sanders. Here is what Mr. Sanders had to say about the program's success:

Planning Pre-Flight can be quite a task with many volunteers heavily involved in organizing and running various activities. But the thought of all the work that was put into it quickly vanished when our incoming cadets arrived on the first day. It was such a wonderful experience to be able to give a warm welcome to our new folks and to be part of the team designated to provide them a first glimpse at this wonderful university we call home and the family we have here at Det 810.

Pre-Flight afforded our incoming cadets many wonderful opportunities and experiences, including the opportunity to move in early with our staff helping (avoiding the rush on the day of all-university move-in), a chance to meet and engage with their peers and our terrific volunteers, a schedule filled with food and fun, and information that would ease their curiosities or fears regarding both life at Baylor and in AFROTC. Pre-Flight offered a little something for everyone: small groups, teambuilding activities, ultimate Frisbee, a cookout, pool and bowling, a movie night, etc. And what a better way to finish than to serve our university home by helping fellow Baylor students move into their dorms!

The goal of Pre-Flight is to welcome our incoming cadets to the family while easing their transition into college and/or AFROTC. Judging by the smiles and vigor of those who engaged in Pre-Flight, the great leadership experience gained by our staff, and the tremendous fun we all had together, I say "mission accomplished".
