How do I know if I am required to take a placement exam?
Placement exam requirements are based on the student's choice of major and/or program and ACT or SAT scores. Placement exam results do not bear credit. The score determines the level of the course for which the student may register.
Mathematics Placement Examination - MPE (For registration in Pre-Calculus or Calculus)
Students whose SAT Math score is less than 650 or ACT score less than 31 must take the Mathematics Placement Exam in order to register for Calculus I (MTH 1321). Math scores of at least 650 SAT or 31 ACT exempt students from taking the MPE. As a result of the exam, Precalculus (MTH 1320) or other preparation may be required before taking calculus. Further information, including guidance for preparation and links to practice exams, are available on the Math Department web page. (For a list of majors and programs that require calculus, click HERE) Precalculus for Business students (MTH 1308) and Calculus for Business (MTH 1309) courses do not require placement exams. Students may access the online exam through the Blackboard/My Courses/Math Placement link on the Baylor web site. There is no charge for the MPE, no materials are needed, and calculators are not allowed. Students are allowed to take the MPE only one time. Call 254.710.3562 or email Margaret_Salinas@baylor.edu. for additional exam information.
Modern Language Placement Exam - MLPE (For registration in French, German, or Spanish)
The Baylor foreign language requirement for most majors is based solely on demonstrated competence in the language at the fourth semester (2320) level and not on a certain number of completed courses. Students should therefore begin their study at a level consistent with their previous preparation in the language. To that end, an appropriate score on the Placement Exam in French, German, and Spanish allows students who have studied any of these languages to register for higher-level courses in order to complete the requirement in fewer than four semesters. For advanced placement in other languages, contact the division director for that language.
The Placement Exam is not required if you wish to register for a beginning course (1401) in French, German, Spanish, or any other language. Nevertheless, the Placement Exam in French, German, or Spanish is still recommended as a means of self-assessment for those who have studied any of these languages.
A photo ID (Driver's license, high school ID, Baylor ID, etc.) is required to take the exam in the lab. The exam is available on a first-come, first-served basis anytime the Language Acquisition Center (LAC) is open. Allow 30 minutes for the computerized exam; arrive at least 30 minutes before the lab closes.
The lab is located in Draper 300, phone 254.710.4526. For more information, see www.baylor.edu/lac/. New students who have submitted a New Student Advising Questionnaire will receive an email with an online exam option. There is no charge for the MFLPE.
