Direct Loans

Learn more about Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans below. The combined amounts of the subsidized and unsubsidized loans cannot exceed the below academic year maximums nor your Cost of Attendance (COA) minus all other awarded financial aid.

Annual Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loan Limits

Sophomore (30-59 hrs) $6,500 (up to $4,500 may be subsidized)
Junior or Senior (60+ hrs) $7,500 (up to $5,500 may be subsidized)

Direct Subsidized Loan

  • Low-interest loan in the student's name, awarded on a need-basis. Interest is paid by the federal government while the student remains in school enrolled in at least half-time hours, and repayment is deferred while the student is in school.
  • Limited to students who demonstrate need on their FAFSA.
  • Eligibility: As determined by the federal processor at the time you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • For Renewal: Complete the FAFSA each academic year, and maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Note: If you were selected for verification, this aid will not credit to your semester bill until the verification process is completed.

Direct Unsubsidized Loan

  • Low-interest loan in the student's name. Interest is accrued while the student remains in school enrolled in at least half-time hours, and repayment is deferred while the student is in school.
  • Available to students who complete the FAFSA, and do not qualify on a need basis for the full amount of the Direct Subsidized Loan.
  • Students may qualify for a Direct Additional Unsubsidized Loan if their parent(s) are denied a Direct PLUS loan, or if the student meets the federal guidelines for independent status for financial aid purposes.
  • Eligibility: As determined by the federal processor at the time you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Renewal Requirements: Complete the FAFSA each academic year, and maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress.
