Music Theory

The Music Theory major in the Bachelor of Music degree is designed for students who wish to concentrate their study on the theory of music. Students choosing to major in Music Theory will conduct research under faculty mentors who are engaged in scholarly discourse on the national and international level. Areas of study include:

  • Theoretical Systems
  • Advanced Orchestration
  • Counterpoint
  • Music History
  • Applied Music

All students desiring to pursue a Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Education, or Bachelor of Arts in Music degree must audition before members of the appropriate applied music faculty for acceptance into a music degree program.

Graduates with degrees in Music Theory from Baylor have gone on to graduate study at other prestigious institutions and many have become theory professors.

All majors offered through the School of Music require ensemble participation each semester. The School of Music offers a variety of ensemble opportunities in the following areas: Band, Choir, Early Music Ensemble, Handbells, Jazz, Opera Theater, Orchestra and Chamber Music. The School of Music presents more than 300 concerts every year.
