Use of Armstrong Browning Library Materials
The Armstrong Browning Library is a non-circulating research library. All requested items must be used in the third-floor Belew Scholars' Room, with the exception of the Library's audio/visual holdings which are used in another third-floor location. While the book stacks are not open for browsing, the Library's resources are available to all--graduate and undergraduate students (disregarding school affiliation), post-doctoral scholars, and the general public. Fellowships are available for scholars who wish to conduct extensive research using the Library's holdings.
For those who desire a quiet and elegant reading area but are not requesting the use of Armstrong Browning Library materials, a large and comfortable study hall is available on the main (second) floor in the John Leddy-Jones Research Hall.
Audio/Visual Services
Equipment for the use of phonograph records, tape recordings, videos, slide projection, microfilm and microfiche is available on the third floor of the Library.
Photoduplication Services
Reproduction services are available to readers at a minimal cost. These services include photocopying as well as supplying images from Library resources. Complete instructions and order forms are available at the Library services desk or in the scholars' room.
Saturday Morning Use
Appointments to use Armstrong Browning Library materials on Saturday mornings, 9:00 a.m. to noon, should be made well in advance with either the Curator of Manuscripts or the Curator of Books & Printed Materials, depending upon material type.
Locating and Requesting Books, Periodicals, Music Scores and Audio/Visual Materials
All books, music scores, audio/visual material and many of the periodicals located in the Armstrong Browning Library are listed in BearCat, the Baylor University Libraries' online catalog. BearCat terminals are located on the Library's main (second) floor, in the third-floor Library Services center, and in the Belew Scholars' Room.
A Periodical Catalog located at the back of the main floor's John Leddy-Jones Research Hall indexes periodical articles and newspaper clippings regarding Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning and the Armstrong Browning Library which do not appear in BearCat. The Newspaper Clippings file has blue-banded cards and is located on the left side of the catalog; the file for periodical articles is located on the right side of the catalog. Each file is indexed by author, title, and subject in one alphabetical listing.
Rare Books & Printed Materials
Books and printed materials with the following BearCat location codes are considered rare: Rare, Brownings' Lib, Brownings' Lib Cop, 19th Cent, Scores. Also, periodicals dated before 1901 or with the designation of Meynell Collection are considered rare. Requests for the use of rare books, rare periodicals, and music scores are handled on an individual basis by the Curator of Books & Printed Materials (Cynthia Burgess, Room 309, 254.710.4959).
How to Request Books, Periodicals, Music Scores & Audio/Visual Materials
Those requesting use of library materials will be registered into the Belew Scholars' Room where use is carefully monitored. Readers will be expected to provide a photo ID, complete an Application for Use of Research Materials, and adhere to the Regulations for Use of Research Materials. To request an item, turn in a completed Call Slip to the ABL staff member at the third-floor Library Services desk, giving the location information, the complete call number, and other required data. Requested materials will be delivered to the reader in the third-floor scholars' room.
All library materials should be returned to the ABL staff member at the Library Services desk. Library materials may be placed on HOLD for up to two weeks for patrons who need to return to use an item.
Locating and Requesting Original Manuscripts and Letters, Archival Material, Photographs, and Realia
Original Manuscripts & Letters
All original letters and manuscripts are considered rare. These materials do not appear in BearCat but can be searched for through the use of the online Guide, card catalogs, printed finding aids, or an in-house database. Requests for the use of original manuscripts and letters are handled on an individual basis by the Curator of Manuscripts (Rita Patteson, Room 318, 254.710.4967).
Archival Material, Photographs & Realia
A printed guide to the Library's archives, photograph collection, and realia items is available in the office of the Curator of Manuscripts. These materials do not appear in BearCat; to discuss their use, please make an appointment with the Curator of Manuscripts, Rita Patteson.
