Truett Alumnus, Stephen Farrar, was ordained into the gospel ministry on October 14, 2007, at the First Baptist Church of Galax, VA. He is currently serving as music minister at First Galax. He has been there since November of 2006.

AMARILLO--Passion for missions provided the dominant theme of the 2007 Texas Baptist Ministry Awards, presented during the Baptist General Convention of Texas annual meeting in Amarillo Oct. 29.
Elmin Howell accepted the W. Winfred Moore Award for lifetime ministry achievement. Cindy and Dennis Wiles took the George W. Truett Award for ministerial excellence. And Dick Hurst--who was unable to attend--was named the recipient of the Marie Mathis Award for lay ministry.

Former church secretary Joy Fenner defeated West Texas preacher David Lowrie by 60 votes to become the first female president of the Baptist General Convention of Texas on Monday afternoon at the group's annual meeting in Amarillo.

Fenner, who was named an honorary alumna of George W. Truett Theological Seminary in 2001, is a retired missionary who has risen in the ranks of Baptist life.

The American Library Association has included the works of two Baylor University professors - The Listening Heart: Vocation and the Crisis of Modern Culture by the late Dr. A.J. "Chip" Conyers and Discovering God: The Origins of the Great Religions and the Evolution of Belief by Dr. Rodney Stark - in its list of Top 10 Books in Religion for 2007. The list was published in the Oct. 1 edition of ALA's Booklist Magazine.

Christopher MackThis year, a new form of ministry has started for the men living in Penland Residence Hall. Christopher Mack, resident chaplain in Penland, started a program this year that, so far, is only being done in this residence hall.

Ben Witherington IIIDr. Ben Witherington III, professor of New Testament interpretation at Asbury Theological Seminary, is delivering the annual Parchman Endowed Lectures this week at George W. Truett Theological Seminary. Witherington, a leading evangelical New Testament scholar, addresses the formation of the New Testament canon as well as methodologies in the historical study of these sacred texts.

Nearly a century after Truett came to Baylor, then-Baylor President Herbert H. Reynolds presented the idea of starting a seminary at Baylor that would uphold traditional Baptist ideas and beliefs and naming it after the man who had saved the university so many years before.
