The Department of Sociology at Baylor University has a tradition of stressing diversity and innovation in its graduate program. The small, close-knit department provides students with individual attention as well as an integrated program. Students are given extensive training in social research, both basic and applied. Housed within the department is the Center For Community Research and Development. All graduate students receive supervised experience in the administration of survey research from Center staff. In addition, students receive training in experimental design, participant observation, interviewing skills, causal modeling and advanced statistical analysis. A major emphasis in our program is the applicability of sociological and research skills for today's job market. The Graduate Program in Sociology offers two degrees: the Master of Arts Degree in Sociology; and the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Applied Sociology. Most large state universities emphasize only their Ph.D. programs and often neglect the 'lower status' Master's Degree student. Then again, students from relatively small undergraduate departments sometimes "get lost" in large programs, where the "sink or swim" doctoral-level attitude prevails. Here at Baylor, we cater to students from small to moderate size undergraduate programs who want to earn the next higher-level degree, but also want that extra care and concern a small department like ours can provide. We do not downplay the importance of the training and maturity that Master's Degree study provides. We are especially sensitive to students who do not have firm career goals. The Baylor program offers a dual emphasis: preparation for working in applied social research or teaching at the community college level; and preparation for Ph.D. graduate work The quality of our program is reflected by the institutions to which our graduates enter for work or additional study and in our graduates' rankings in the upper quartile on standardized assessment tests. We usually have some 10-14 students enrolled in the master's program, with 3 in the Ph.D. program. Graduate Studies in the Sociology Program Masters Program General Information
