About SCOLAS

SCOLAS is one of the oldest regional Latin American studies organizations in the United States, formed in 1966, at about the same as the National Latin American Studies Association. It is tax-exempt and non-profit and it serves all serious students of Latin America whether specialists or non-specialists. The purpose of SCOLAS is to provide a professional association to foster the interest and enterprise of scholars in Latin American studies, to encourage more effective teaching and research therein, to adduce a continuing dialogue among scholars and knowledgeable individuals both within and without the organization and to communicate by fora, publications and other means with any individuals concerned with Latin American life and culture.

SCOLAS holds an annual meeting, alternating usually between a major Texas city and a Latin American location. All members in good standing may participate in panels and fora offered at the annual meeting, planned generally during the month of March. A newsletter, the SCOLAS Bulletin, is distributed to members two or three times per year. SCOLAS gives two annual awards to its members, one for a monographic study and one for an article-length publication relating to any topic on Latin America or U.S. Hispanic matters. A cash scholarship is also awarded to graduate students to help with their research expenses. Any SCOLAS member who is also on the faculty of an accredited college or university may nominate one student per year.

The council from its inception hoped to attract members from the academic community, business, labor, professions, governmental service, and any other occupation with individuals concerned with Latin America and its confluence with the United States. Provision has been made for these categories of membership: regular, institutional, retired, students, and honorary. To be a member, you need only pay dues and participate in the affairs of the organization
