Dr. RUSSELL GAVIN is Assistant Professor of Instrumental Music Education at Baylor University. His duties include teaching undergraduate and graduate music education courses, supervising student teachers, and assisting with the University Bands. Gavin holds a Ph.D. in Music Education from Florida State University, a Master of Music in Euphonium Performance from the University of Notre Dame, and a Bachelor of Music Education from Auburn University. His public school teaching experiences include Director of Bands/Fine Arts Chair at Eufaula High School (Eufaula, AL) and Director of Bands at South Girard Middle School (Phenix City, AL).

Gavin's research interests include the persistence and attrition patterns of undergraduate music education students, music teacher training and curriculum, perceptions of applied teaching, and the use of audio recording and playback in music education. He has presented research at multiple regional and national venues, including the MENC/NAfME Biennial National Conference, MENC/NAfME Summer Research Symposium, Texas Music Educators Association Conference, and the Iowa Music Educators Association Conference. Gavin’s publications have appeared in the Journal of Research in Music Education, the International Journal of Music Education, the Journal of Music Teacher Education, Southwestern Musician, and the Florida Music Director.

Gavin maintains an active schedule as a conductor/clinician across the country. He has presented educational clinics at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, as well as the state music education/band conferences of Connecticut (featured clinician), Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Nevada, and Texas. In addition to these roles, Gavin continues to serve as an adjudicator of marching and concert band festivals/competitions across the country.

Dr. Gavin maintains an active schedule in the marching arena as Corps Director of the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps. Previous summer activities have included serving as Wind Coordinator for the Florida State University Summer Music Camps, Assistant Director of the Auburn University Summer Honor Band, and counselor/instructor at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lakes, Michigan.
