LESLEY SISTERHEN McALLISTER is Associate Professor of Piano and Director of Piano Pedagogy at Baylor University. In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in piano pedagogy, she also teaches class piano and directs the Piano Laboratory Program, a program of group and individual instruction for pre-college students. Her previous position was at the University of Central Oklahoma, where she taught both class and applied piano. Dr. McAllister holds a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from the University of Houston, where she was a student of Nancy Weems; a Master of Music degree in piano performance from Florida State University as a student of Leonard Mastrogiacomo; and the Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Oklahoma, where she studied piano and pedagogy with Dr. Jane Magrath. Her doctoral research investigated the use of imagery, mental practice, and relaxation techniques in musical performance enhancement.
In service to the profession, Dr. McAllister held the position of Chair of the Editorial Board for the MTNA E-Journal from 2009 until 2012.
Dr. McAllister is the secretary for the Baylor University chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda. She also serves as the co-chair for the planning committee of the Pedagogy Student pre-conference seminar for the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy.
Dr. McAllister has presented sessions for the 2008 National Group Piano and Piano Pedagogy (GP3) Forum, two national conventions of the Music Teachers National Association, and several university piano pedagogy programs. As a clinician, she has also presented several workshops for the Texas Music Teachers Association state conference and the College Music Society regional conference. In addition, she is a frequent adjudicator in festivals, auditions, and competitions.
As an active writer, Dr. McAllister has been published several times in American Music Teacher, and was awarded the 2010 Article of the Year award by the Music Teachers National Association for her article titled "Should Music Be Fun?", which was featured in the February/March 2010 issue. She has also been published in Clavier Companion and the online journals Piano Pedagogy Forum and the MTNA E-Journal. She is the author of The Balanced Musician: Integrating Mind and Body for Peak Performance, which was recently published by Scarecrow Press. The web page for this book is LESLEYMCALLISTER.COM.
