April 4, 2006Noze brother antics offensive
The Baylor community was rightly offended at the Facebook photos showing an off-campus party in which white students dressed as stereo-typed African-American rappers.
Yet, did anyone blink an eye at this week's sponsored, on-campus university event in which a male NoZe brother dressed in drag as a pregnant nun? The NoZe brothers live to be offensive and they again succeeded.
Yet if a white NoZe brother dressed as a black-faced minstrel, would the university and the Lariat simply have considered it as the clever, funny humor of the NoZe brotherhood? Would President Lilley still "congratulate the NoZe for reminding us all periodically that we need to laugh?"
The fact that this event occurred at Bill Daniel Student Center with President Lilley present and that a photo of the NoZe-as-nun ran prominently on the front page of Friday's Lariat suggests, sadly, that anti-Catholic bias continues to be alive and well in the Baptist community.
Does it run so deeply on campus that no one even stopped to consider the offensive nature of the costume and its image on the front page of the paper?
A life of celibacy in devotion to the religious life is one that should be respected by all Christians, not simply Catholics (1 Cor. 7).

U.S. doesn't belong in war
In response to Hastings Walton's letter Wednesday, I find it very interesting that he failed to mention the Vietnam War in his list of noble American wars of the past 150 years.
Perhaps he realizes that we had no business being there much like this war in Iraq.
In addition, this war thus far has not preserved life at all in any way. Americans are dying along with Iraqis in daily attacks.
The U.S. is not the protector of the world, but if we were, then we would need to invade a lot more countries with more problems than Iraq.

Nun not appropriate for paper
Wow Baylor, you really surprised me this time. On the front page of Friday's Lariat was a picture of a NoZe Brother dressed as a pregnant nun. Besides the hypocrisy of a publication supported by a religious school printing such an obviously sacrilegious picture, it seems as though the Lariat and the pictured NoZe brother have completely forgotten about the events regarding the respect of peoples' differences that have transpired on this campus as of late.
What have we learned Baylor? If you are white, then it is not acceptable to portray derogatory caricatures of other races.
Similarly, if you are Baptist, then it is not your place to portray derogatory caricatures of other religious sects or religions.
I am sure that if the NoZe brother put on blackface for the parade, people would be outraged, but since he was only making fun of Catholics, I am sure nobody will really care.
