Freshmen compete for class officer positions
Sept. 6, 2002By Katie Morgan
Every fall semester brings freshmen who are eager to represent their class in student government. This year's freshmen class officer elections will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday at the ticket booth in the Bill Daniel Student Center.
Six freshman are running for president this year ä Davin Bickford, Andy Clem, Abby Hagen, Yvette Owo, Kirk R. Marshall and Ashley Hutchinson.
'I am humble, but I know that I can take command,' Clem said.
Clem, a pre-business major from Austin, was involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was co-captain of the baseball and tennis teams in high school.
'I think Baylor's a great university,' Clem said. 'I don't have one specific goal, but I know I can take control and get things done.'
Marshall, a pre-business major from Houston, said he wants the class of 2006 to leave a mark on Baylor.
In high school, Marshall served on student government and was involved in the choir and in the community. If elected Marshall hopes to address the current parking problems on campus and work on getting more maintenance employees for the dorms.
'It's not my job to figure out the problems, but to figure out the solutions for them,' Marshall said.
Hutchinson, a child and family studies major from Shreveport, La., said she wanted to unite the freshman class as one and increase student involvement.
Hutchinson, who was senior class president in high school, said she sees potential in her class.
'I want to create a sense of unity and reach out to people,' Hutchinson said.
Bickford said he has not seen anything at Baylor that needs to be changed, but is interested in the role of president. Bickford, a pre-business major from Tulsa, Okla., was involved in student government in high school, and believes he could be a good representative for the freshman class.
'I'm really open to change,' Bickford said. 'I want people to approach me, and talk to me about what they want to improve.'
Hagen, a fashion design major from Sioux Falls, S.D., said she could help students with whatever they need. Hagen was captain of her volleyball team in high school and was a member of FCA.
'I think it would be something fun,' Hagen said. 'Being president would help me get to know Baylor better.'
Owo could not be reached for comment. She is a business major from Denton.
Candidates running for vice-president are Zack Rodriquez, Mary Landers, Nicole Weaver, Angela Connatser and Chase Swearingen.
Those running for secretary/treasurer are Michael Kaleq, Stephanie Javier, David Jakybowski, Lee Tran and Tara L. Stevens.
Student Congress representatives will also be elected Monday.
Results of the election will be announced at 8 p.m. Monday in Burleson Quadrangle.
