Security of Mobile Devices

Smart phones are incredible devices, allowing us to accomplish a myriad of tasks while on-the-go. However, in order to do those things, personal and work-related information may be used or presented by these devices. Some of this information may end up being stored on them in cache or files.

Therefore, it is very important to set a PIN/passcode/password that must be entered in order to use the device. ITS guidelines require that all university-owned mobile devices utilize a passcode. (www.baylor.edu/its -> About Us -> Guidelines -> Mobile Device Guidelines) It is also wise to do this on personal smart phones.

Because of their size and frequency of use, these mobile devices are at risk of being misplaced, stolen, or left behind. When a Baylor-owned phone is lost, it should be reported immediately to ITS via the Help Desk (254-710-HELP) during normal business hours or via an email to lostdevice@baylor.edu after hours. This email will route to an ITS technician who will contact you. Be sure to include your contact information in the body of the email since the lost Baylor device will not be an option.

 

 

 

Still Going Phishing

Phishing is sending an email that falsely claims to be a legitimate, trustworthy entity in an attempt to obtain private information to be used for identity theft. The information sought usually includes items like usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, and social security numbers. The email messages can look very authentic.

Baylor students and employees continue to regularly be the target of these phishing attacks. These bogus messages have subject lines like "Email Shutdown Alert!", "Your mailbox has exceeded" and "Webmail Account Alert!!" They often reference various "issues" with the individual's email account. The message also asks the user to reply with their username and password or to click a link and enter their username and password on a non-Baylor site. Remember that this is a scam! ITS will never send an email asking that you reply with your username/password and you should never enter your Baylor username/password on any site other than baylor.edu (i.e. bearweb.baylor.edu or mail.baylor.edu or www.baylor.edu/bearid). If you are suspicious of any email you receive, contact the ITS Help Desk (x4357) about the message.
