Summer
Please send the following information to Shelly Adams. You will receive an e-mail about when to send your list, along with a template to complete with the following information for each student:
Please submit your TA1s teaching assignments on BearWeb before the 12th Class Day. If you have any changes after the 12th class day (if a student is no longer going to be a TOR but was on the list you provided us or vice-versa), please e-mail Shelly Adam with these changes so we may adjust our records accordingly. If this happens, please also provide a brief explanation as to why the change was necessary (i.e. the student took a job off campus, the student received low evaluation scores, etc.).
Department Responsibility
Since the University is paying for these benefits for students, spouses and children, it is our job (and yours) to ensure that the student teaches at least 6 credit hours during the calendar year. We understand that what you are submitting to us now is your best estimate of what the student will be teaching. However, departments that do not assign the listed courses or equivalent hours over the calendar year will be charged for the student's benefits (and that of the spouse and children if applicable). As long as you follow through with your estimates or assign equivalent hours (at least 6 credit hours in a calendar year), this should not be a problem for your department. We will check the 12th class day list to verify your assignments and will contact you if we notice any discrepancies.
SACS Requirements
All TA1s must have 18 graduate hours in the field or a justification on file for why he or she is eligible to teach. The University audits instructor credentials every semester. If you assign a TA1 who has not earned the 18 graduate hours, please fill out
the justification form.
How many hours can a TA1 teach?
Please be aware that if you assign more than 6 credit hours per semester, you must submit an email request to Dean Lyon requesting permission for the student to teach that many hours. The rationale behind this request is to ensure that the teachers of record maintain forward progress in their studies.
