Graduate Student Teachers of Record
Do You Qualify for Benefits?

Approximately eight percent of courses at Baylor are taught by well-prepared graduate students. Each graduate student teacher is required to attend seminars or courses on teaching at the college level. Most of these participate in the Seminars for Excellence in Teaching (SET) offered by our Academy for Teaching and Learning. Some departments offer their own courses or seminars on teaching in their disciplines. For example, our Religion and Philosophy programs each offer courses on teaching, while the department of English provides a week-long intensive seminar for all new teachers of record. In addition, graduate students are mentored, both by more experienced graduate student teachers and by faculty members.

Each semester the Graduate School presents excellent student teachers with Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Awards. These award recipients are given the opportunity to participate in a national conference where they receive additional pedagogical training.

Graduate student teachers are evaluated highly by their undergraduate students. On average, students rate their graduate student teachers higher than full-time faculty members when asked to respond to the statement, "I learned a lot in this class." The graduate student teachers at Baylor University demand excellence in their classrooms. Their extensive training, supportive mentoring, and recognized merit all help graduate student teachers to engage the minds of their undergraduates, help them meet their potential, and prepare them for future success.
