Baylor Fastfacts

  • Brazos Riverwalk will be completed on both sides of the river from LaSalle Avenue to Lake Waco Dam with pedestrian river crossings at LaSalle Avenue, Interstate 35, and Lake Shore Drive bridges. More than $12 million has been invested to begin this process with the next phase to begin soon along Baylor University at a cost of $3.4 million. Grant application will be submitted on the next section which will be adjacent to the library site at a cost of $4.5 million.
  • Loop 574 (Business 6) will be completed from Highway 6 to I-35 which is adjacent to the library site. The City has committed significant funding toward this $11 million project.
  • Council awarded a $15.9 million project for the construction of a new dam on the Brazos River which will insure a constant level town lake at the project site.
  • Council has authorized $3 million to assist in a $9 million completely redeveloped Hilton Hotel and a new conference center and is continuing to negotiate on a new upscale hotel & conference center on the river.
  • Council will be considering a bond election for a variety of necessary public facilities in the spring of 2006 including a $15 million renovation of the Waco Convention Center to make sure Waco has the proper infrastructure to serve our growing community in the future (initiative passed on May 12, 2007).
  • $2.1 million expansion of the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame has been authorized as the first phase of a planned $20 million expansion project (initiative passed on May 12, 2007).
  • Council is considering a proposed $20 million private development in the central downtown area with mixed use of retail, office, residential and student housing components.
  • The National Parks Service is evaluating the Waco Mammoth site for development as a national Park.
  • Over $5 million have been committed to develop an aviation industrial complex specializing in aviation technology at the TSTC Airport.
  • The City & County have recently completed a $10 million expansion to the Cameron Park Zoo.
  • $1 million dollars has been donated to begin outdoor sculpture exhibits along the river and the downtown area.
  • A growing recreational area including $3 million water park, $10 million regional tennis & fitness center and a $3 million softball/baseball park upstream on the Brazos has been completed.
