Lawrence Sweetman, Ph.D.

Dr. Lawrence Sweetman is director of the mass spectrometry laboratory in the Baylor Institute of Metabolic Disease in Dallas. He received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Miami in Florida in 1969, and is boarded in biochemical genetics by the American Board of Medical Genetics. He directed the biochemical genetics laboratory at the University of California San Diego from 1972-90 and during that same period advanced from assistant to full professor in residence in the department of pediatrics. From 1990 to 1996 he was director of the biochemical genetics laboratory at Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles and served as professor of pediatrics and pathology at the University of Southern California. Dr. Sweetman has authored 141 published papers and 16 book chapters on inborn errors of metabolism. In addition to his clinical laboratory diagnostic work with mass spectrometry, his research interests include inherited disorders of amino, organic and fatty acid metabolism.
