Reception to Honor Esteemed Baylor Physicist’s Admission to Russian Academy of Sciences

WACO, Texas - On Wednesday, March 15, 2017, the Baylor Research and Innovation Collaborative, will host a reception honoring Dr. Marlan O. Scully and celebrating his recent election as a foreign member to the Russian Academy of Sciences. The reception will begin at 3:30 p.m. in room 3160, to be followed by an address by Dr. Scully at 4:00.

A pioneer in laser science, the list of Scully's remarkable achievements include formulation (with 1955 Nobel Laureate, Dr. Willis Lamb) of the Scully-Lamb quantum theory of the laser, the classical theory of the free-electron laser, and the theory of the laser gyroscope, among numerous others. His work is credited with vastly expanding scientists' understanding of quantum optics, enabling development of lasers previously unimaginable.

He has been similarly recognized by six other international academies and societies, including: the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Academia Europæa, the Max Planck Society, the National Academy of Inventors and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Scully has received virtually every major international award associated with his field.

Born in Casper, Wyoming, Scully completed his graduate studies at Yale. Scully joined Baylor University in 2011, where he established and directs Baylor's Quantum Optics Laboratory. He holds positions at Princeton University and Texas A&M University, where he is a Distinguished Professor and holder of the Herschel Burgess Chair in the department of physics, and directs Texas A&M's Center for Theoretical Physics.
