Graduate Program

The graduate program in American Studies is an interdisciplinary program offering comprehensive study in American institutions and culture. The basic program consists of courses in American history and American literature.

Prerequisites for graduate work in American studies include twenty-one semester hours in any one or in any combination of the following areas: American history, government, journalism, literature, and philosophy; history of American education; history of religion in America; and American sociological problems. There is no foreign language requirement. Applicants must submit a General Record Examination (GRE) General Test score; a GRE score and GPA predictive of success in this program are recommended.

Graduate work in American Studies for the Master of Arts degree consists of thirty semester hours, at least fifteen of which must be in courses numbered above 5000.
